Judging parameters for the ‘TOP 100 INDIAN MAGAZINE COVERS’ are considered by the panel of honorary judges –
Visual, Cover Headline, Typography, Copy, Appearance, Production Treatment (Matte, Spot UV, Foiling etc), Fixed Elements (Masthead, Time line, Price, Bar code, QR code etc), Special Elements (Peel out stickers, Badges, Offers, Announcements etc).
First round of shortlisting the cover is completed…300 out of 5000+ covers are on the table.

MAGworld Excellence Awards 2018

Concept

To recognize the best editorial work in Indian magazine publishing during the year 2018 and presenting the Best Story & the Best Cover of the year.

Mission

– To recognize the best story and the best cover in each genre of magazines

– To bring a spirit of healthy competition among editorial products

– To encourage editorial fraternity to deliver the best editorial quality

– To help the Indian magazine publishing industry by raising the magazine quality

Methodology

MAGworld awards will be given to the winners of participants of MAGworld contest in various genres in broadly two areas of magazine publishing – ‘MAGworld Best Story’ & ‘MAGworld Best Cover’. Each genre (out of 18 genres precisely) will have one award for the best story/article and one for the best cover for that particular genre. Then there will be two grand awards for the ‘MAGworld Best Story of the Year’ and for the ‘MAGworld Best Cover of the Year’, which will be given to the winner among the genre winners.

Judging

These awards will be given to the winners of an open contest at national level which will call for entries from various Indian magazines publishers/editors. After the closing of accepting entries after the last date, our panel of judges will go through the each and every entry thoroughly and then collectively they will come up with the winner for the each award title. Panel of judges will consist of veteran Editors and Art Directors (Six each) having great experience of working for variety of magazines for many years.

General Rules for the contest

1. Participation in the contest is absolutely FREE.

2. Only print editions (Hindi or English) of ‘Indian magazines & the Indian editions of International magazines’ can participate in the contest.

3. Only those magazines are eligible for the contest which are either sold on newsstands (magazine stores or book shops or online stores) or sold based upon subscription.

4. Newsstands or subscription based any B2C or B2B magazine with the periodicity of a Weekly, Fortnightly, Monthly, Bi-Monthly & Quarterly can participate in the contest.

5. Custom publications, School/College Journals, Bookazines are NOT eligible for this contest.

6. Participating magazine can send their entries only from their already published issues between 1st January 2018 and 31st December 2018.

7. On the behalf of a magazine, only the Editor (Executive Editor with the Publisher’s consensus) or the Publisher of the same can send the entry for the contest.

8. In case of participant’s any misinterpretation of any of above mentioned rules, MAGworld reserves all the rights to determine the eligibility for the participation in the contest.

9. With the every entry, participant will be considered as agreed automatically (without even signing any exclusive agreement) with MAGworld that MAGworld has all rights for using each of these entries to produce MAGworld Excellence Awards related communications, promotion materials and finally a magazine to showcase winning entries.

10. Finalist will have to send (only if asked) to send high resolution files to produce a final showcase of best of editorial work of the year.

Rules for the MAGworld Best Story contest

1. Any qualified (as mentioned above) magazine can send THREE entries at the maximum in one genre (mentioned below) and it can participate in THREE genres at the maximum.

2. Same entry can also be sent in more than one genre.

3. An entry can be any story, feature, interview, how-to, profile, essay or any editorial article which is published in the main issue of participating magazine.

4. The entry must reach to magworldcontest@gmail.com before 10pm of the last date.

5. Each entry must be sent in Single PDF file only and file size should NOT be more than 2MB. Judges may ask the participant to send another copy of entry if it is not found proper enough.

6. File name of that PDF file must be in ‘Yourmagazinename_Categoryname_##.PDF’ format. (Eg- if there is a magazine named – ‘INDIAN MAGWORLD’ and they want to send their one (first) entry for the category – ‘SPECIAL INTEREST’, the file name for the PDF file will be – ‘INDIANMAGWORLD_SPECIALINTEREST_01.PDF’. For second and third entries in same category will be named as ‘INDIANMAGWORLD_SPECIALINTEREST_02.PDF’ & ‘INDIANMAGWORLD_SPECIALINTEREST_03.PDF’ respectively. If same magazine wants to send fourth entry in different category say ‘GENERAL INTEREST’, then filename will be – ‘INDIANMAGWORLD_GENERALINTEREST_01.PDF’ and so on.)

7. Along with this PDF, participant must have to write a covering note (Max. 150 words) to describe what makes their entry to be a prospective winner of the contest.

8. Entries will be considered as disqualified in case of failing any of above mentioned rules.

Rules for the MAGworld Best Cover contest

1. Any qualified (as mentioned above) magazine can send THREE entries at the maximum in one genre (mentioned below) and it can participate in THREE genres at the maximum.

2. Same entry can also be sent in more than one genre.

3. An entry means a ‘Front Cover’ which is published on the any of the main issue (not the supplements or extra booklets) of the participating magazine.

4. The entry must reach to magworldcontest@gmail.com before 10pm of the last date.

5. Each entry must be sent in a JPEG file only and file size should NOT be more than 1MB. Judges may ask the participant to send another copy of entry if it is not found proper enough.

6. File name of that .JPG file must be in ‘Yourmagazinename_Categoryname_##.JPG’ format. (Eg- if there is a magazine named – ‘INDIAN MAGWORLD’ and they want to send their one (first) entry for the category – ‘SPECIAL INTEREST’, the file name for the .JPG file will be – ‘INDIANMAGWORLD_SPECIALINTEREST_01.JPG’. For second and third entries in same category will be named as ‘INDIANMAGWORLD_SPECIALINTEREST_02.JPG’ & ‘INDIANMAGWORLD_SPECIALINTEREST_03.JPG’ respectively. If same magazine wants to send fourth entry in different category say ‘GENERAL INTEREST’, then filename will be – ‘INDIANMAGWORLD_GENERALINTEREST_01.JPG’ and so on.)

7. Along with this JPG, participant must have to write a concept note (Max. 100 words) to describe the context & the idea behind making this cover.

8. Entries will be considered as disqualified in case of failing any of above mentioned rules.

20 Noticeable magazine covers in the last three months!

Only 10 years ago today, when I used to write for this blog, I used to get around 30 great covers every month. Even at times, many magazine covers had to struggle to make their place in the ‘Top 30 of the month’. Sadly, today the editorial quality of magazines has become so bad that even three months in a row, it is difficult to collect a total of 20 great covers. The condition of Hindi magazines is even worse, the benchmark has to be pushed too low to include one or two of them anyway. Only the publisher and editorial team is responsible for this bad condition, no one else.

It is really upsetting nowadays that I have to wait for 4-6 months to see good magazine covers those I can count easily on fingers… and then publishers crib that magazines are dying.

Newsstand Observations

New Launches

MAIN HU KISAN - Sep 2017 
The most pathetic cover of any magazine I have seen so far! 
   Just look at the masthead - Main Hu Kisan, and then look at the main visual and the cover stories(?). Do you see any connection between the genre of the magazine (as its title suggests) and the main visual? It happens when a magazine is managed by a person with no publishing & editorial skills. 
   As a magazine critic, all I can say on this cover - What were they thinking?

BETTER PHOTOGRAPHY - Jun 2017
They should realise that in order to make ‘zara hatke’ (or call it ‘extra ordinary’ cover) for the ‘special’ (anniversary) issue, they actually produce the worse cover! Look at the regular covers (All on the Right); they are focused, logical, thoughtful, disciplined, branded and are still creative unlike the ‘special’ cover (on the Left). In the name of ‘special’ you cannot do just whatever you want to do… at least the regular covers have strong connection between the theme of the issue, the main visual and the main cover story. Latest cover of BP anniversary issue is not even aesthetically pleasing.

MAXIM - Jun/Jul 2017
One more badly designed cover! MAXIM’s 'HOT 100’ special issue…A good photograph… but poor visualisation…unattractive copy for the cover stories… weight imbalance… very indisciplined & basic mistakes of making a great cover of a special issue… looks very shallow issue by looking at this cover (Left). Some of the past covers (all on the Right) were great in comparison to this current issue… even that ‘only text’ cover was also better at least that one had minimum elements on the covers and therefore there was lesser scope left for the creative team for creating mistakes.

ELLE - May 2017
Still lot to learn before Indian magazines go for such covers (left) in the line of foreign magazines (all on the right). This could be a great cover of ELLE (India) but they just spoiled the opportunity.
